Kitten Care

Grooming the Siberian coat.

The Siberian's triple coat is gloriously low-maintenance — but a few simple habits keep it at its best.

The right tools

  • A wide-tooth metal comb (essential — not optional).
  • A slicker brush for finishing.
  • Cat-safe nail clippers.

How often

A quick comb-through 2–3 times per week is plenty for most Siberians. During the spring and fall coat blow-outs, daily combing for a couple of weeks prevents mats and dramatically reduces shedding.

Bathing

Siberians have a water-resistant coat and rarely need bathing. A gentle bath every few months — or before show or photos — is plenty. Use a cat-specific shampoo only.

Nails

Cat and kitten nail clippers are available at pet stores. Keeping claws short and smooth helps prevent accidental scratches and injuries. Check them regularly and trim as needed, often every 2–3 weeks. Start gently while your kitten is young so it becomes a familiar routine. Clip only the clear tip, avoiding the pink "quick." If you're unsure how, ask your veterinarian or veterinary technician to demonstrate at your kitten's next checkup.

Ears, eyes, teeth

  • Wipe outer ears gently as needed — never insert anything into the ear canal.
  • Clear any small eye discharge with a damp cotton pad.
  • Brush teeth weekly with cat-safe toothpaste, or use dental treats.
